Babu Xavier

Born in Kerala in 1960. Babu Xavier is a self-taught artist. He has held 15 solo exhibitions including two in Basel and Copenhagen. He has participated in the International Triennale of Art, New Delhi in 1986, the Biennale at Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal in 1988 and 1994 and the Centenary Exhibition of the Bombay Arts Society in 1989. Babu Xavier lives and works in Trivandrum.

Having rejected a traditionally academic art education, Babu Xavier chose to gain from associations with artist K. Jayapal Panickar and the Cholamandal Artists' Village. Bright colours forcefully speak the mind of the artist, the unadulterated intensity of carmine red competing with passionate oranges and effervescent greens. Ranging from the obscurity of blacks and browns, and venturing to audacious fluorescent shades, he created humans and animals that are suspended in surreal landscapes.

The female, male or animal form assumes centrality in his paintings with sexuality materialising yet enduring the subliminal. The strong subtext strives for dominance but remains subservient to form.

Every painting possesses a `written' barcode, an element sourced from the prevalent consumer culture.

Two important books had visuals by Xavier.Perhaps, even belonging to a different genre of publication. Anoop Skaria's `The Queen of the Arabian Sea, The Legend of Kochi', tells its story like a contemporary fable that causes the reader to earnestly turn the pages for more. A 30-page pack, it begins with an introduction on how Kochi came into being, the geographical changes that caused the emergence of this extraordinary place.

The second book was called Clairvoyant, A Book Of Poems By Danish-American Poetess Susanne Jon, Denmark 1994, Based On A Set Of Paintings.
